General Ben Viljoen was Assistant Commandant-General of the Transvaal Burgher Forces and member for Johannesburg in the Transvaal Volksraad. At one stage he was tipped to rise to the highest levels of the Transvaal administration, but his political career was destroyed by the irreconcilable elements in Boer society and after the war he emigrated to America. His memoirs were written while he was a P.O.W. on the island of St. Helena.
