Third Edition, with a new prefatory chapter, and the Transvaal conventions of 1881 and 1884.

This copy belonged to Lionel Cripps - the first speaker of the Southern Rhodesian Legislative Assembly - and has his signature on the front paste down "Lionel Cripps, Cloudlands (his homestead in the hills above Umtali), Umtali, S.R.(Southern Rhodesia)".

"Upon his retirement from politics in 1935, Cripps helped establish the National Archives and served as a member of the Historical Monuments Commission and developed a passion for rock art, making copies of all known rock art in Rhodesia. Many of his reproductions of rock paintings and drawings are archived at the University of Zimbabwe's Archaeological Unit and an academic study of his work, entitled Immortalizing the Past - Reproductions of Zimbabwean Rock Art by Lionel Cripps, was released in 2007." - Wikipedia

This copy contains 3 maps (Political, Rainfall & Orographical Maps of South Africa). In 1885 the author, James Bryce, travelled across South Africa from Cape Town to Fort Salisbury in Mashonaland, passing through Bechuanaland and Matabeleland, and by steamer from Beira to Delagoa Bay. Thence through Natal, Transvaal, Orange Free State, Basutoland, and the Eastern Province of the Cape Colony. He records impressions social, economic, & political. Details physical features, history and politics of South Africa from its earliest times to the 1890's.

Handsome red cloth hardcover, 499pp. Includes chapters on Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe) and Lesotho.
