In his foreword, Puxley notes there are three categories of elephant hunters:the "professional hunter," the "tourist hunter," and " the devotee of Africa whose life has mostly passed in his wanderings up and down the land he loves." After service in the Boer War, he embarked on a number of shooting expeditions into the interior of the continent. In Mozambique, he hunted lion and eland with additional eland and trophy buffalo taken in Nyasaland. There are chapters on hunting lion, elephant, hippopotamus and giraffe, as well. From his narrative, it is easy to note the author fits into his third category.
