Black lettering on the front board and to the spine and has minor rubbing along the bottom edges of the boards. Contains numerous full-page black & white photographs and text throughout, Avedon visited seventeen states and one hundred and eighty-nine cities and towns to take these remarkable and in some ways, haunting photographs of western people as they go about their daily work.

Western states visited are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Overall, internally clean and the binding are in very good condition.

Regarded as a project in photographic history and an expression of the power of photographic art, this book was first published by Thames & Hudson in 1985. Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was probably the most important fashion photographer of the twentieth century.

He had a long and glorious career, working for the likes of Harper’s Bazaar (whose art director, Alexey Brodovitch, discovered Avedon working as an advertising photographer for a department store), The New Yorker, Life and Vogue for whom he was the lead photographer between 1973 and 1988.

In addition to his ground-breaking fashion work Avedon photographed (amongst others) mental hospital patients, The Beatles, the Civil Rights Movement and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

His large format portraits of drifters, miners and cowboys, In the American Midwest, became a top selling book and travelling exhibition and is regarded as an important hallmark in 20th Century photography. His other major books include Performance and Woman in the Mirror.

His early life was fictionalised in the 1957 Hollywood musical Funny Face which starred Fred Astaire in the role of "Dick Avery".
