xvi plus 434pp. Original Green Pictorial Cloth Hardcover. Illustrated throughout with some magnificent woodcut scenes.
Of particular interest to Boer War historians/ enthusiasts is a full-page woodcut of Lange's Nek and Boer trenches as seen from the summit of Amajuba. Uncommon 1st Boer War title, written by a Lady War Correspondent.
Some light blistering to cloth and a few marks on covers. Light foxing to last few blank pages. Prev owner's name in faded fountain ink to pre-title page. Apart from the few flaws mentioned, the book is in very good condition indeed.
Lady Florence Caroline Dixie (1855-1905) was a British traveller, war correspondent, writer and feminist. She was the daughter of the 8th Marquess of Queensberry. She was sent to South Africa as the first official war correspondent, covering the First Boer War and the aftermath of the Anglo-Zulu War for the Morning Post. She spent most of her time astride a horse hunting rather than reporting the war and the text reflects her interest in sport and exotic meals. This book supports the power of the British Empire but at the same time, it presents a sympathetic view with the Zulu cause and the Zulu king Cetswayo.
