First edition rebound in red half leather, with gold embossing to spine (done for Struik by the monks in the monastery in Mozambique in the 1960's). New endpapers.
343 pages, 8vo (220mm x 145 mm), frontispiece portraits of General Lord Chelmsford, portrait of Sir Henry Bartle Frere - a laid down photograph, 2 portraits, 8 folding plans. Only large folding Military Map of Zululand at the end is largely missing. Badly foxed end papers, frontispiece and introduction, some foxing and marks throughout but textblock clean and bright throughout. Some minor wear to gilt and leather at spine edges, overall a fair to good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sidney), South African Bibliography volume 2, page 98, 'A full account of the campaign by a war correspondent who was well acquainted with the country, and had a good knowledge of the natives and their language and customs. The author traverses the statement so often made that Sir Bartle Frere "caused the war", and maintains that the difficulty which culminated in the hostilities had existed a quarter of a century before the High Commissioner arrived in South Africa, and that later on it became abundantly evident that Cetywayo had been actively preparing for war.'
