Much of the pamphlet carried the address of Sir George Grey, who pointed out to those gathered that Africa had been the cradle of civilization and he expressed the hope that, in time, the Library would rival that of the Library of Alexandria. Prince Alfred then declared the Library open, placed books upon the shelves to much acclaim, and was duly thanked by William Porter.
