310 pages: illustrations (some colour). Cloth, dust wrapper slightly frayed along edges.
First published in May 1970 this became an instant classic. The first print-run sold 10 000 copies, the second 15 000, the third a further 15 000 and by the 1980s the sales were approaching the 100 000 mark. Early editions in good condition like this copy are very hard to find.
The Women's Cultural Group were hands-on publishers. If readers had any queries, they indicated, they could send their query (accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope) to 294 Grey Street, Durban and it would be 'speedily' answered!
In the introduction it is pointed out that the indentured labourers who arrived in Natal from India found conditions harsh and unrelenting and cooking offered both an escape and a link to their old life and thus traditions were carefully held and fostered. Cooking history, healthy living advice and western and Southern African aspects and influences are all covered and combined to produce a classic book that should be treasured.
