Publishers quarter dark green morocco and pebble grained cloth with gilt titling on the spine. Top edge gilt. 6 prelims, 299 text pages, 27 full page plates with tissue guards, of which 20 are coloured and 59 half-tone illustrations. The original brown card front wrappers for the first publication in parts, from part one (Dated 1900) to parts eleven + twelve (Dated 1911) are bound in at the rear. The last leaf in this volume is the original title page that Distant had prepared, before his death, for this work. Distant had intended to publish a second volume, but this never happened as he died in 1922.

In 1924, two years after Distant's death, Francis Edwards and Wheldon and Wesley published this volume as the final and definitive compilation of all the work that Distant and his co-authors had done since 1900.

CONDITION DETAILS: The binding has bumped corners, minor wear and a few light stains. There is a booksellers label on the front paste down. Internally good. The plates are clean.
