DEBATES at the THIRD ORDINARY MEETING, May - June, 1905

169pp including index to debates at rear.

Contents clean with a stamp on front endpaper indicating that this copy came from the Records Dept. of early Johannesburg mining magnate and Randlord Hermann Eckstein.

Eckstein was a German-born British mining magnate who came to South Africa in 1882. He partnered with Julius Wernher and Alfred Beit to establish the firm Jules Porgès & Co. Later he established a firm under his own name in the famous Corner House. The building was named after him with Eckstein translating from German as corner stone, thus Corner House. His home, built in 1894, was the first of the so-called Parktown Mansions, a series of stately homes built by the wealthy mining bosses around Johannesburg at the end of the 19th century. It was called Hohenheim after the suburb in Stuttgart where he was born. After his death it was briefly occupied by Sir Lionel Phillips before he was banned from the Republic due to his role in the Jameson Raid. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick of Jock of the Bushveld fame became the next owner. After Eckstein's death in 1893 he brother Frederick continued the business.
