An interesting circa 80 word signed inscription by Denys Reitz on the half-title of the book - Lectures On the Council of Trent - by J.A. Froude, recounting his inheritance of the book from the previous owner, Harold George Richardson who was a British Soldier in the Boer War and had "settled in the Heilbron District of the O.F.S. on a small farm with his many books, for he was well read. He became enamoured of a 'poor white' Afrikaans girl whom he proposed to marry but died of pneumonia a few days before the ceremony. To my surprise I found that in his will he had left his well-stocked library to me. Deneys Reitz".
The book, published in 1898 (a later edition) is of secondary importance. It is in about very good, clean c ondition and importantly has the ex-libris of Richardson on the front pastedown. The author, James Anthony Froude, was a novelist, historian and biographer of some importance.
Deneys Reitz manuscript material is somewhat uncommon.
