Fifth impression, hardcover Octavo bound in Dark Green cloth boards, with 475 pages. Gilt titles and decorated gilt motif of Jock on the front board, and has gilt titles to the spine.
Illustrated with detailed ink drawings in the margins, black and white plates throughout, and has a colour frontispiece with a tissue guard. Head and heal are slightly bumped/rubbed and there is some minor wear to the corners.
This edition retains the inaccurate illustration on pages 65, 337 and 457 of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back and on page 316 a horse is shown trying to climb an impossibly high bank.
Book went into nearly a 100 editions and was quickly translated into Afrikaans, Dutch, French, Xhosa and Zulu. Overall the binding and the book are in very good condition.
