Book Description: 320pp. Original Hardboard cover. Includes map of \"lost in the veld\" at the back of the book.
Book Condition: The book belonged to a schoolgirl and includes some underlinings and footnotes in pencil on certain pages. One of the text pages has been lavishly \'decorated\' with a random bright display of green fountain pen ink. The cover pictorial has been outlined in pencil. Both the front end-papers include her name and a hand-traced title (traced through the EP from the title page). Otherwise the book is still in remarkably good condition considering its age and the fact that it belonged to a child. Bindings are tight and the cover is not too worse for wear.
Reviewing the book in the TLS on first publication in 1907, John Buchan wrote; \" to those who have some experience of the land and the life about which Fitzpatrick writes, Jock of the Bushveld will be a cherished possession. We know of no African book in which there is the same minute and loving observation of nature. Sir Percy sees the beauty of a landscape while the average man thinks of a waste of thorn and swamp. There is something of Jefferies in the style, something of Borrow, a touch of Mr. Kipling, and a great deal which is his own \" While Mendelssohn describes it as \"Perhaps one of the best dog stories ever written.\"
