xv, 476pp. Colour frontispiece and 22 other full page b/w plates and b/w marginal illustrations on all pages. Original pictorial gilt green cloth, gilt lettering to spine,very slightly rubbed at top and bottom of spine.Ex libris Sir Frederick Carrington (1844-1913).A signed presentation copy from his father-in-law the traveller and botanist H.J.Elwes, Christmas, 1907. An expert in musketry he raised and commanded the Frontier Light Horse in the Transkei War with extraordinary success, which lead to the annexing of Transkei to the Cape Colony. In 1878 he successfully commanded the Transvaal Volunteer Force against Sekukuni. During the Basuto War he was surrounded for nearly a month by a vastly superior force of 5000 well-mounted Basutos. They were eventually relieved by Charles Mansfield Clarke. 1884 saw "The Carrington Horse" (2nd Mounted Infantry) expedition to Bechuanaland. In 1893 he was a military intelligence advisor in the Matabele War. He was then posted to Gibraltar but was recalled almost immediately to quell the rebellion in Rhodesia. In the Boer War he organised and led an expeditionary force which marched through Northern Rhodesia to Pretoria.
