JOCK OF  THE BUSHVELD - DENNIS WHEATLEY'S COPY

This is the 3rd. Impression of the 1st. Edition of this classic work published in the same year (1907) and identical to the 1st. Impression in all respects (including the incorrect dung beetle) except for the statement of Third Impression on the title page. A most interesting copy from the library of novelist Dennis Wheatley who was also a collector of literature and first editions. Wheatley had two bookplates during his lifetime. The earlier bookplate (which states ""From the library of D. Yates-Wheatley) was originally on the front pastedown. It was subsequently moved by Wheatley from the front to the rear endpaper and in its place he pasted his more frequently used later ex-libris (Dennis Wheatley) designed for him by Frank C. Pape. The front free endpaper is annotated in ink and signed by Wheatley as follows: ''One of my earliest books and given to me as a Christmas present in 1927. But used by me in 1934 when writing my book 'The Fabulous Valley' - Dennis Wheatley". The ex-libris on the rear pastedown has some early handwritten annotations by the young Wheatley -  "An excellent book for a boy.... description of bush and wild animals. South African Veldt."

This is a very good plus clean copy in the original gilt embossed green cloth with minimal wear and the gilt titles and picture of Jock are extremely bright. There is a light stain of the ffep. passing through Wheatley's inscription. There are faint traces of the removal of the early ex-libris from the front pastedown (referred to above), visible on the image, otherwise a really bright crisp copy of this most interesting copy with a fine provenance.
