One seldom sees a copy of this book so well preserved. No jacket. Cream leather-bound spine with gilt design and dark blue title block, gilt titles. Blue cloth-covered boards, speckled, some corner wear but very firm. Marbled endpapers in cream, pale pink and blue.
Bookplate on ffe of May Hely-Hutchinson and possible subsequent owner initials on bookplate. Some prelim pp foxed, otherwise book inside generally very clean and well bound. Book must have been produced with uncut pages some of which have been cut leaving rough edges. Top edge Gilt.
22 b/w full page illustrations, colour frontispiece with tissue guard, b/w vignettes on almost every page. On p 65 well-known example of the dung beetle pushing the dung with its front end. Error corrected in later editions. Pages [i-vi]vii-xvi pp 1-474[475].
A South African classic, Fitzpatrick uses the story of Jock, the dog, to describe his adventures in the Bushveld. Edward Caldwell was brought to South Africa to do the drawings from life, while in the bushveld.
