A very nice copy of the first edition first impression of this classic South African title, inscribed by the illustrator, Edmund Caldwell. In the original green cloth with gilt illustration of Jock on the front cover and gilt lettering and and illustration on the spine panel and front board. With all the requisite issue points and no indication of later printing on the title page. Undated two line signed inscription by Caldwell on the half-title page.

A few small unobtrusive marks on the boards and a light circular stain about 2cms. in diameter at the top edge of the blank verso on the frontispiece (of Jock), barely visible on the frontispiece and the opposing title page. Still a very good plus tight clean copy, well above the average found, for this seminal title.

Copies of this book inscribed by Caldwell are considerably scarcer than those inscribed by Fitzpatrick himself.

Edmund Caldwell (1852 - 1930) was a British painter , illustrator , sculptor and etcher . He was best known for his animal watercolours and landscapes, but his specialty was domestic dogs. Today he is almost certainly best remembered as the illustrator of Jock of the Bushveld. He was the brother of Mary Tourtel, the creator of Rupert Bear.
