The first edition, first impression of this South African classic. An inscribed presentation copy dated Johannesburg, 31 Oct 1907 on the front pastedown (see image). In the original green cloth with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. With a coloured frontispiece of Jock and twenty two full page monochrome plates and numerous in text vignettes by E. Caldwell, with all the first printing points including the infamous dung beetle pushing the dung ball with its forelegs.

A very good plus, well above average, tight attractive copy. Both the green cloth and the gilt decorations are bright and sharp. There is mild rubbing at the extremes of the spine and one 3-4mm. tear at the top of the spine. There is some mild intermittent foxing mostly confined to the prelims but apart from the author's inscription, the book is otherwise clean and unmarked.

First editions of this major title inscribed in the month of publication are very scarce and most desirable. An important copy, sold on Antiquarian Auction 59, inscribed by Fitzpatrick as "this first copy of Jock", was also dated October 1907.
