A new historical journal requires introduction. The idea of a journal focusing on Natal and Zululand was conceived by two postgraduate students at the University of Natal, Durban. Although reservations were expressed as to whether the venture could be justified, it was felt that it would provide the growing num

ber of scholars who are already active in this field with a channel through which they can publish their findings.

The response which we have encountered in preparing the first edition would seem to confirm that it fulfils a need and it is hoped that it will stimulate further interest in what has been a somewhat neglected area of southern African history.

Despite it being envisaged as essentially a historical journal, articles dealing with archaeology, anthropology or political economy will be welcomed. The review section is not restricted to Natal and Zululand. A wide range of books relating to South African history are, and will be reviewed.
