A true classic of African exploration. Speke was an English explorer and the first European to reach Lake Victoria in East Africa, which he correctly identified as the long-sought source of the Nile. This is the account of his third and final expedition to Africa, which was organised by the Royal Geographic Society and took place in 1860. On this expedition Speke was accompanied by his friend and fellow Indian army officer James Grant (1827-1892), having fallen out with his former travel companion Richard Burton.

The appendix contains a list of the plants collected by Captain Grant between Zanzibar and Cairo, also a list of men, their duties and pay during the expedition.
