This fascinating, seemingly bizarre and uncommon view of Table Bay, Table Mountain and surrounds was engraved by Daumont and hand coloured.
It was drawn specifically for viewing through a zagroscope. This device was used in the 18th century for 'parlour entertainment'; the zagroscope comprised a lens and mirror, generating a mirror image and pseud-3D effect - see the mirror image.
There is some acid burn outside the plate line from framing with non-archival materials. The area within the plate line is in good condition, although there are dots of foxing.
