How it works

Register

This fascinating, seemingly bizarre and uncommon view of Table Bay, Table Mountain and surrounds was engraved by Daumont and hand coloured.

It was drawn specifically for viewing through a zagroscope. This device was used in the 18th century for 'parlour entertainment'; the zagroscope comprised a lens and mirror, generating a mirror image and pseud-3D effect - see the mirror image.

There is some acid burn outside the plate line from framing with non-archival materials. The area within the plate line is in good condition, although there are dots of foxing.

  • Overall Condition: Very good
  • Size: 39cm x 23cm
