First Edition: 256 pages, frontispiece portrait, illustrations, brown cloth titled gilt on the spine, slightly worn dust jacket now preserved in a Brodart protector, a very good copy.

Albert Luthuli, grandson of a Zulu Chief, became successively a school master, local chief, and in 1952 president of the African National Congress, until it was banned in 1960 after Sharpeville. Both before and after he became a leader of African opinion, Luthuli threw the whole weight of his influence against violence and in favour of a multi-racial society based on justice and equality. His stand on public affairs caused him to be deposed by the government from his position as Chief of Groutville and led to his imprisonment on more than one occasion. Apart from being an African nationalist, Luthuli was also a Christian and his religion had a profound effect on his activities: he once said "I am in Congress precisely because I am a Christian." He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960.
