Russell, of the Grenadier Guards, was wounded at Belmont and later saw service through the Free State and into the Transvaal. His Battalion were guards of honour at the ceremony when the Union Jack was raised in Church Square in Pretoria. "The little Union Jack (made by Lady Robert's own hands) ran up the pole of the flagstaff and fluttered out into the breeze, and the massed drums and fifes of the Brigade thundered out the national Anthem. It was an impressive scene, and one that will be recorded in the world's history." (page 85.) Russell took part in many of the actions undertaken to trap the Boers in the Cape in the latter part of the war.
