Balkema, after running a bookshop in Amsterdam (where he also published underground leaflets during the Nazi occupation of the Second World War), came to South Africa in 1948. According to Frank Bradlow, he "revolutionised" publishing in South Africa, producing books primarily on African subjects. Those paying tribute include a who's who of South African writers of the time, some of whom being first published by A.A. Balkema.
