The first edition of David Fram's first book Lider un Poemes/Songs and Poems, self published in 1931 and printed in Vilna, Poland. In Yiddish. Illustrated with 7 full page Irma Stern paintings reproduced in black and white and including her well know portrait of David Fram, the author. The available literature concerning Irma Stern's illustrations of books by author's other than herself is sparse and I believe there are probably very few examples. This book would be one of the few and certainly amongst the earliest if not the very earliest in this category. In any event, it is unquestionably a very scarce item.
David Fram, intellectual and poet, was probably South Africa's best known Yiddish writer. He befriended many of South Africa's writers and artists including Irma Stern, who painted his portrait and had a substantial correspondence with him.
The book is about fine in the original stippled black buckram and is probably an unread copy. It was almost certainly issued without a dustwrapper.
A most uncommon book for the Irma Stern completist and also for the collector of Jewish South Africana and Yiddish literature.
