Born in 1851 and educated at Rugby school, Selous left for Africa in 1870 to be a big game hunter. He spent much of his time hunting in Sub-Saharan Africa and served in the Matabele wars. During the great war, he was given a commission in the 25th Battalion of the Fusiliers, at the age of 63. He was killed during the campaign in East Africa in 1917.

In 1973 a Rhodesian Special Forces unit was formed and named the 'Selous Scouts' after Selous.

Czech: An annotated Bibliography of African Big Game hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, page 115, ‘Written as a tribute to Selous, who was killed in action against German forces in East Africa during the Great War, Millais includes numerous passages from his subject’s books and articles, recounting big-game hunting adventures in Africa and other international locales.’
