Ernest Mancoba was probably South Africa's first professional Black modern artist, and exhibited from the late 1920s onward. He is almost unknown in the land of his birth. His reclusive lifestyle and the fact that he left South Africa in 1938 have led to many misconceptions about his contribution to contemporary art - even among influential critics.
Yet Mancoba's work is well known and and highly regarded in Europe and he took part in the landmark exhibitions of the Cobra movement of 1948-51.
This book is the product of extensive research conducted by Elza Miles in South Africa, Britain, Denmark and France. This book includes the first definitive catalogue of Mancoba's oeuvre.
