How it works

128 pages: illustrations (some colour), portraits. Quarto. Pictorial cloth, dust wrapper frayed on edges of spine. Signed artistic inscription from Battiss on verso of title page.

Battiss (1906-1982) was Professor of Art at UNISA at the time of publication. He conceived the book at his camp on the Limpopo River (from where he went out looking for prehistoric engravings and rock paintings), looking south to the Karoo of his birth and youth; and north to the islands of Zanzibar, Lamu, Manda and Pate which he had visited as an adult.
