Czech (Dr.Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 – 1999, (2011) page 194, ‘Using a Tolley .500 express with ‘pure-lead solid bullets,’ the author succeeded in bagging a number of lion and oryx in the woodlands and scrub bush beyond Barbera. The lion hunting episodes are quite well written, reflecting the danger and excitement of the moment: “Each (lion), as I walked him up, made a short charge at me through the grass, accompanied by a formidable amount of noise – a deep grunting or roaring, for it is hard to define the noise a lion makes on charging.”’
