Inscribed by author to Frank and Edna Bradlow. The Bradlows themselves did extensive research into the chronological order of the numerous published versions (which very quickly went to several printings in the same year, each with their own subtle little tell-tale differences) of Livingstone's 'Missionary Travels' at the time, with the resulting 'Bradlow variants' becoming the accepted and adopted order of things.

2 Volumes. xxiii plus pages 1 - 236 / vii plus pages 237 - 495. Cloth covers with cellophane protected DW's.

Some mottling/foxing to cloth boards and prelims. No further flaws to report. An excellent and lovingly cared for set from the library of Frank and Edna Bradlow, both volumes bearing their ex libris paste-downs to the front fixed EPs.

Except for a few very brief extracts in David Livingstone's 'Missionary Travels and Researches', his journal in which he recorded, as health and opportunity permitted, his daily observations and experiences, was never published. It contains much more that was never transcribed into his published account, for example about his frequent attacks of illness, his views on missionary policy, and above all, perhaps, his adverse comments on Portuguese rule in Angola and on various Portuguese associated with the slave trade. It shows also that in writing 'Missionary Travels' he occasionally altered what he originally recorded, and often relied from memory alone. These two volumes compiled by Professor Schapera include everything except some technical passages. Professor Schapera has also provided extensive notes which identify persons, places, plants, and animals, and also indicate where the journal differs from what Livingstone published in his famous book.
