Brown cloth covers with the ostrich picture to the front board. Bookplate of I & F.W. Hosken on front pastedown. Previous ownership in ink on another front blank page. 252 pages. Issued by Herbert Jenkins' Indian and Colonial Library. Frontispiece. A small printed note tipped in between the title page and frontispiece reads: GENERAL BOTHA'S ARMY is operating in the neighbourhood of the great waterless desert dealt with inn this book. It forms the great problem of the campaign.

Promoted to Colonial Magistrate in South Africa's Cape Colony, Scully travelled into the desert areas of Bushmanland south of the Orange River in quest of oryx and springbok. While numerous head of both species were bagged, this is more valuable for its descriptions of the forbidding terrain.
