Hugh Lanion Hall came to South Africa as a child of 11, and educated in Cape Town. He moved to the Transvaal in 1875, served in the Zulu war of 1879, and was a veteran of the Battle of Majuba. He prospected for gold in Baberton, but finally settled down growing fruit in the Eastern Transvaal. “His autobiography is a most original, vivid and fascinating narrative of life and adventure in the early days of the Eastern Transvaal, with reminiscences about all the leading figures of history at that period.” (from loosely inserted newspaper article) Grace H. Hall was the wife of H. L. Hall.
