First printing of this post-war classic describing the author's life as a working canal boatman in the final years of the Second World War. It is about three girls who go boating during the war, carrying cargo on England's canals as part of the Ministry of War Transport scheme to provide crews for canal boats. In actuality, women were conscripted to work the canal boats when the boatmen were put into the army so this is part fact and part fiction. Winner of the JOHN LLEWELLYN RHYS MEMORIAL PRIZE, considered a modern classic and reprinted many times.

ACCOMPANIED by two holograph letters (4pp) by the author + one envelope addressed in her hand (postmarked 1950) along with several newspaper clippings related to her writings, dealing with this title and her second book "The Far Cry".
