This is the final publication, a finely bound Subscribers' edition, of a famous South African zoologist, who was employed for three decades by the Transvaal Museum.
The Mammals of South Africa was published from the original manuscript after his death. Correction of minor errors were attended to by an Editorial Sub-committee, which included Dr. V. FitzSimons, the well-known herpetologist. The forward is written by Lt.-Col. J. Stevenson-Hamilton; the colour plates are by Rev. P.J. Smit.
The book is presented in green half-leather and gilt decorated. Gilt stamped antelope head on the spine, gilt stamped zebra head on the front cover, all page edges gilt, and end papers illustrated with a menagerie of South African fauna and flora.701 pp., colour frontispiece, map, 23 colour and 54 black & white plates; 138 measurement tables, maps, and index; gilt rimmed pages .
No. 197 of 500: has the autograph signature of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of "The Mammals of South Africa" Book Fund. Laid in is a compliments card of the Trustees of "The Mammals of South Africa" Book Fund, also ink-stamped "148" and requesting acknowledgement of safe receipt of the volume.
The condition of this book is very good overall. Minor cracking of hinges.
