On 3 January 1901 Martial Law was proclaimed in a number of towns including Worcester, to prevent the risings of the population in support of the Boer commandos that the British authorities expected.

The notices are numbered up to 64 and have been mounted in a roughly chronological order. Eight Notices are missing - either lost or possibly never produced. An unnumbered Notice about horses and mules was issued by Major Dobbin on 10 April 1901. This could be the missing Notice 41.

The early notices were issued in the name of Queen Victoria and are headed VR with the crest. After the Queen's death early in 1901 the Notices were headed ER for Edward VII.

Another of the notices issued in December 1901 by Captain W.A. Eaton gives the verdicts of 13 military trials of residents of Graaff-Reinet and Laingsburg. The verdicts were "guilty of being in arms against His Majesty" and the sentences were Death, commuted to Life Imprisonment.
