Hardback with dustcover over slate boards with gilt blocking to front board and spine. Photographic illustrated endpapers. Photography by Alain Proust.

Lying, three hundred years ago, a day's ride from Cape Town on the journey eastward, Meerlust made a convenient place for a traveller to stop and gather his strength overnight before tackling the hard climb that would bring him over the barrier of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. Convenient and welcoming. for the owners of Meerlust have always been hospitable, always ready to set extra places at their well-provisoned table, and to prepare extra beds for their guests' repose.

The house, built in Cape Dutch style, has been the family home of the Myburghs for eight generations and it bears its history well. Elegant with its fine gable and sturdy whitewashed walls, it is still the hub of a busy farm, now given over to the production of some of South Africa's best wines.

Today, in the valley of the Eerste River and overshadowed by the Helderberg, Meerlust lies a bare half hour from the Mother City, yet its welcome remains as warm and sincere as ever, and fine food and wines still grace its table.
