In 1946, discouraged by the austerity od post-war Britain, the author, then a young metallurgist with a new wife and baby, applied to join the Geological Survey of Tanganyika. Within a year the young family were settled happily in Dodoma and, despite the strangeness and occasional harshness of their adopted country enjoyed life in the colonial service - the kind of life that is often, fondly recalled with the openinh words: 'When we were in.....'
In this collection of memoirs-some funny, some shocking- Babu recalls the practical jokes, misunderstandings and accidents that befell himself and his friends in the colonial community. We learn of the horrors and pleasures of travel in Africa, the desperate extremes of weather, and horrifying encounters with lions and leopards, snakes and crocodiles, od African customs and beliefs, and the inexplicable bush telegraph.
