Wolhuter was born in Beaufort West in 1877. His family moved to the Lowveld in the 1890s. In 1902, after a period with Steinacker's Horse during the South African War, he became one of Stevenson-Hamilton's original game rangers in what was to become known as the Kruger National Park. He served as a ranger for forty-four years, and his memoirs contain a rich fund of game stories. "It was a hard life: full of risks; but we were compensated by the interesting things we saw and did." page 313.
