Smith-Dorrien was one of the few survivors of Isandhlwana. ".....for commencing with the Zulu War, and an account of my own escape from Isandhlwana, I am able, as an eyewitness, to give details of the saving of the colours of the 24th Regiment by Melville and Coghill, which vary considerably from those given at the time." Author's preface. He was nominated for a Victoria Cross, but, as the nomination do not go through the proper channels, he never received it.
Smith-Dorrien also saw service in the Boer War and the First World War.
