Two volumes, contemporary rebinding in green marbled covers and quarter leather. Raised bands, gilt lettering to spines. The set was bound in the 1970s by George Bayntun Fine Bindings in Bath.

Vol 1: Frontispiece portrait of an Amazon, xvii, 386p. Previous owner's name on half-title page.

Vol 2: Frontispiece portrait of The King's Victims, small tear to edge of page. 412p. Appendices, some uncut pages.

Burton traveled to the Kingdom of Dahome in order to establish trade relationships, to protest the kingdom's involvement in the slave trade, and to investigate charges that King Gelele participated in ritual human sacrifice.
