An ethnographic survey of Black Africa from 1508 to 1727 based on the text and illustrations of travel-accounts of early travellers.
The book was produced in German in 1962. In 1967 English, text only, was added in a companion booklet. It includes facsimiles of text and illustrations of 32 travel-accounts, including the work of Van Linschoten, Houtman, Dapper, Tachard, Kolb(e).
269 pages of plates from the travel accounts. Small maps of Africa, Congo, Madagascar, South Africa in facsimile text. Large colour folding map of Africa at the end of the book.

Cream buckram-covered boards with map of two hemispheres with Black Africa in gilt. Brown title on spine with gilt on small brown panel at base of spine. Some insect damage on spine. Binding Very Good. English companion volume has cream soft cover with hemisphere design. Binding Very Good.
Contained, and has been well protected, in a sturdy cardboard slipcase illustrated with Black African family scenes. The outside of the slipcase also has some insect damage.
