Snaffles was born Charlie John Payne in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1884 and died in Wiltshire in 1967. He developed an early passion for hunting in all its forms, and the Services which, as he tells us, "in those days went hand in hand". For well over seventy years he was to be a keen follower of all types of hounds on horseback.
Field sports and army life on the North-West Frontier in India and in Somaliland and Aden includes pig sticking exploits with brief notes on sabur and tiger.
