I have had the pleasure of knowing Eric Balson for most of my life. He was the one who encouraged me down the road of wildlife art, and over the years has become a great friend and mentor.

He belongs to a small group of people who not only love the African bush, but who have spent a lifetime looking after it. We are grateful to such folk, for they are few and far between. I have no doubt that it is largely due to their dedication and uncompromising integrity that we still have such a rich diversity of flora and fauna in that part of our planet.

I often think of our safaris together.....waking at dawn to the sound of lions and hyenas and the feeling of overwhelming excitement that adventures are about to unfold- from exploring vast tracts of unspoiled wilderness teemimg with wildlife, to mending a puncture in tsetse fly-infested country at midday....and from cooling off in a crystal-clear stream to sitting around  the campfire after sunset listening to Eric's amazing stories.

We haven't been to the bush together for a while, but when I read the pages of his books, I am taken back to those campfires a long time ago. I can still smell the acacia wood smoke and feel the cool evening breeze on my skin. I can even hear the sounds of an African night.
