An extremely scarce and possibly unique municipal election flyer for Mabel Malherbe as candidate of Sunnyside Ward in Pretoria.
Mabel Malherbe (1879-1964) was a South African politician and journalist. She was the first female to be elected mayor of a South African city (Pretoria) and also the first female to become a member of parliament. She founded the first Afrikaans women's magazine Die Boerevrou (1919-1931) in which her famous uncle on her mother's side, Eugene Marais, made regular contributions. Her reason for establishing a women's magazine was because she realised what great need Afrikaans women all over South Africa had for advice on childcare, healthcare and home management. Her magazine not only provided instruction but also first-class literary entertainment and regular updates on important events so that her female readers on isolated farms could remain just as well-informed on current affairs as any of their urban sisters.
