xxv plus 264pp. Cloth hardcover with gilt pictorial/title to front cover and gilt title to spine. Illustrated in b/w throughout.

Cover is faded towards edges. Otherwise very good.

Marks the centenary of Murraysburg (named after Ds. Andrew Murray) in 1955. The layout and history of the town, associations, business, schools, the war years, the church and the community that served it over a hundred year period.

There is a chapter that will be of interest to the BOER WAR historian; Herewith an extract that is roughly translated from the Afrikaans.... 'the town remained unprotected during the Anglo Boer war, because the British military rules dictated that the community should volunteer 25 town guards before the Brits would deploy 75 soldiers to bring the town guard upto the minimum requirement of 100 men. The town however failed to do so and lost protection, with the result that the Boer Commandos moved feely in and out and through the town at their whim. As such, the town became known as 'Die rebeldorp' because no defence force could be established. The Brits however, under the command of Lieut. Col. Douglas, retaliated by destroying everything in the form of food and clothing in the town'...........
