Cohen describes the ambitious aims of the grand publishing venture and its ultimate failure. Although it was originally intended to publish 3000 sets the print runs never exceeded 2000 and ultimately only 1750 sets were ever published.
This copy bears a slip tipped onto the front free endpaper stating, 'Subscribers' Proof Copy. This volume of the Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill, "My Early Life" and "My African Journey", does not form part of the official collected edition, and is issued to registered subscribers only as an uncorrected proof copy for examination. There is also a stamp to this effect on the half title page.
