Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 2 page 434: Count Sternberg resolved to see the South African War in some capacity, under the British or Boer flag. He offered his services to both sides, and eventually, so he asserts, went as war correspondent with the Boers. His experiences were mainly with Cronje, and after witnessing the investment of Kimberley he was captured at Paardeberg. His strictures on Buller and Methuen are very severe, but he is enthusiastic in praise of the English soldiers, while he condemns the obstinacy, ignorance, and egotism of the Boers. The book ends with a chapter on the Military Lessons of the War, and there is a critical introduction by Colonel Henderson, traversing some of the author's opinions.
