Ndugu MâHali, known as Kalulu, was the personal servant and companion to explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. He was given to Stanley as a slave by an Arab merchant in present day Tanzania during the explorerâs quest to find the missing Dr. David Livingstone. Named Kalulu by Stanley, he was educated in London and accompanied Stanley on his travels to Europe, America and the Seychelles. He inspired Stanley's 1873 romance novel My Kalulu, Prince, King and Slave: A Story of Central Africa. He died tragically during an expedition in 1877 in the Lualaba River, the headstream of the River Congo. Stanley later renamed these rapids Kalulu Falls in his memory.
