Pringle (1788-1834), of Scottish descent, was the most gifted writer amongst the 1820 Settlers. He was fiercely in favour of freedom of the press and clashed with Lord Charles Somerset. His refusal to submit to arbitary censorship involved him in financial losses which precipitated his departure from South Africa.
