xlviii, 335, 269, (iii List of Plates), pages, engraved frontispiece, 34 engraved plates - 1 hand coloured, 6 vignettes in the text, 3 plans, large folding map – Map of the Travels and Discoveries made in Northern & Central Africa, old half leather rebacked preserving the backstrip, marbled paper sides. The leather and marbled paper is very worn and rubbed, the text and plates are lightly foxed throughout and this worse in the Appendix which appears to be printed on less good quality paper.

Hugh Clapperton, Dixon Denham and Walter Oudney (who died in the course of the expedition) were the first Europeans to travel across the Sahara from Tripoli to Bornu and Hausaland.
